The first edition of Labelexpo Europe since 2019 featured a total of 637 exhibitors taking part in the show, which took place between September 11-14 at Brussels Expo in Belgium. Spread across nine halls and covering 36,588 square meters of floor space, the show featured over 250 product launches, with a particular focus on flexible packaging, digitization, and automation.

An unprecedented heatwave in Brussels did not deter 35,889 visitors from 138 countries attending the four-day event. Germany, France and Italy were especially well represented, with large visitor delegations. Equipment manufacturers announced multiple sales across the four days, and an exhibitor rebook rate of 96% was reported for Labelexpo Europe 2025, which will take place in Barcelona, Spain.

Major show features for Labelexpo Europe 2023 included the Automation Arena, which drew in large crowds to every one of its 10 live demonstrations. Visitors witnessed a fully automated workflow, from file creation to turret rewind with automated inspection and MIS integration, without any manual intervention. The participants included Cerm, Esko, Xeikon, Kurz, Grafotronic, and Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives.

Another key show feature was the Flex Pack Trail, where visitors took a deep dive into digital and conventional press technologies, flex pack material constructions, coating, laminating, ink and curing requirements, inline and near-line decoration options, QC and migration testing.

On the show floor

Labelexpo Europe 2023 marked the global launch of the HP Indigo 200K digital press, the successor to the successful HP Indigo series 4 presses, HP Indigo 20000 and 25K digital presses, which have dominated the digital flexible packaging market up to now. HP Indigo reports a 30% improvement in speed and up to 45% increase in productivity over the HP Indigo 25K digital press, and introduced the HP Indigo 200K digital press as a door opener for flexible packaging converters who want to enter the digital market, and a way for label converters to diversify their business into flexible packaging. The HP Indigo 200K digital press also serves as the heart of the E2E Digital Pouch Factory. At Labelexpo, HP Indigo featured prepress, finishing and pouch-making equipment with its partners for flexible packaging applications. Also showing for the first time in Europe was the high-speed HP Indigo V12 digital press, alongside the established HP Indigo 6K digital press. HP Indigo said it brings the value of digital print, which includes print on-demand, short make-ready, sustainability, and variable data, to the entire playing field.

A B Graphic International (ABG) unveiled its most significant exhibition to date at Labelexpo, with its largest-ever exhibit. ABG showcased 17 machines, placing a focus on the future of automation. Highlighting ABG’s commitment to advancing technology, 25 innovations were introduced. At the forefront was ABG Connect, an automated workflow solution. Other notable unveilings included flexo technology, non-stop equipment and the new Vectra G – ABG’s latest SRI and the highly adaptable, fully modular 530 converter. More than 80 dedicated ABG team members attended the event.

Mark Andy reported a highly successful Labelexpo Europe. The company showcased three presses during live demos, including a global premiere – new flexo Pro Series, as well as two hybrids: inkjet-based Digital Series HD (equipped with Kurz Distorun cold foiling unit and Lemu turret rewinder), and the toner-based Digital Pro MAX. Mark Andy also reported lots of interest in its software solutions: the sMArt link on-press monitoring system and ProWORX Label Suite imposition tool. Mark Andy welcomed over 800 visitors over the four days of Labelexpo from 84 countries around the world, which – as the company said – is an excellent result and a great indication of the value of Labelexpo to our industry. In total, 10 new press sales were signed during the show, including a new Pro Series model.

More than 550 attendees visited the Hybrid Software Group booth for product demos during Labelexpo, and more than 30 customers placed orders for packaging workflow and editing software, with an order value of more than €1.5 million, the company reported. Hybrid Software shared the stand with group companies Color-Logic, Global Graphics Software, Meteor Inkjet and Xitron, which together deliver the group’s value proposition – “The Heart of Industrial Printing.” The show also marked the launch of Global Graphics’ SmartDFE, touted as the fastest available Digital Front End (DFE) for digital printing of labels and packaging.

During Labelexpo, Hamillroad Software announced a new partnership with Asahi Photoproducts. The companies say the partnership is set to satisfy growing global demand from brand owners, trade shops, printers and converters for a more environmentally friendly water-wash platemaking process that delivers best-in-class image reproduction. According to Hamillroad, “Brand owners are looking to reduce their carbon footprint and are taking a closer look at production practices, including the reduction of harmful solvents and greenhouse gases. The combination of Asahi’s move to ‘Solvent Zero,’ and Bellissima’s ability to enable fixed palette CMYK and ECG printing offers the flexo market a strategic opportunity to drive down the consumption of harmful solvents and greenhouse gases while driving efficiencies by accelerating the production process.”

Dantex Group’s new look PicoJet 1200 range was in the spotlight. The company unveiled a significant reveal of new technology to the Pico range, plus upgrades to its interface, print quality and finishing capabilities. Dantex Group highlighted its PicoJet range, which boasts a myriad of features for converters, including user-friendly PicoCenter and PicoPilot software with intuitive touchscreen interfaces, exceptional print quality, and unmatched performance even at high speeds, according to the company. Innovations such as SuperText, SuperWhite, and DecoTactile technologies are seamlessly integrated, offering a wide range of finishing solutions for end-to-end label manufacturing. PicoJet is a true hybrid press, offering versatile configurations from reel-to-reel or with a range of inline finishing capabilities and flexo stations before or after the digital engine.

Elkem exhibited its new UV Hg and UV LED curable silicone solutions for sustainable release coatings. The company offers silicone release coatings in a wide range of formats, including solvent-based, water-dilutable emulsion formulations, solventless thermal and UV. Users can choose the most appropriate system for their specific coating equipment and substrate while taking into account energy, sustainability, regulatory and safety requirements. To support the label industry in its transition to a more sustainable footprint, and the conversion to UV LED curing, Elkem introduced new UV LED curable silicone solutions, Silcolease UV LED Series. Silcolease UV LED systems utilizing an Elkem photoinitiator demonstrate excellent cure and physical properties for more sustainable release coatings.

The Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives brand was at Labelexpo Europe for the first time with its new identity. The booth featured Manter products – in particular neck labels – solutions for the food and pharma markets, and many ideas for reducing environmental impact such as the Re-Play range. The branded Manter neck labels are a line of premium self-adhesive materials combining collars and labels for luxury products, ideal for the wine and spirits sector. The line’s self-adhesive solutions are designed for neck labels of all kinds, so that the entire packaging can be coordinated and the product “dressed” in a truly bespoke outfit. Thanks to the development of special ad-hoc adhesives for this type of application, this range offers excellent performance and quality, capable of reducing the so-called “memory effect” of paper.


Xeikon launched a new high-productivity and automated dry toner press aimed specifically at volume label printing with the highest quality. The Xeikon LX3000 model, affectionately known as The Lion, was presented to the public for the first time. Built for a web width of 330mm, the Xeikon Lion LX3000 is a five-color dry toner press developed as the answer to customer demands for higher productivity and more cost-effective solutions for mass production of high-quality digital labels. Visitors to the trade show had the opportunity to experience its 42 m/m operation. This is a 40% speed increase from Xeikon’s current 30 m/m capability. Its automated, precise quality control ensures that the final product meets the highest standards without manual intervention. The Xeikon LX3000 features Xeikon’s Cruise Control System, which utilizes advanced vision technology and artificial intelligence to continuously monitor and automatically adjust print production settings.

Mühlbauer showcased the CL40000, a converting line suitable for mid and high-volume production. The company said the platform sets a new standard for flexible RFID inlay converting systems, and offers  total flexibility and high quality for various output products such as smart labels, smart tickets, wet inlays, and more. The CL400 achieves a high throughput of up to 40 m/m, as well. The system features a two single-row dry inlay input with liner/face web handling, label/ticket lamination, diecutting, and 100% output testing into a single modular system.

Lombardi presented the latest versions of its Synchroline and Invicta presses along with a preview of the next generation of its mid-web flagship press, the Invicta I2 – a prototype print unit was on display. The 26″ Invicta press line is targeted at the market for short run, value-added flexible packaging, as well as other unsupported label film applications including shrink sleeves. Lombardi reported the Invicta on display was sold to Prakash Printers and Coaters of Ahmedabad, India, during the show and will be installed by the end of the year. The Synchroline press platform at the Lombardi booth was shown with a new electronic control system, making it “digital ready” for future integration with full-color VDP or digital embellishment modules. Those in North America interested in seeing the Lombardi Synchroline in action can visit the newly opened Imageworx Innovation Center in Levittown, PA, USA, just outside of Philadelphia.

FLEXcon featured products for medical device, pharmaceutical, industrial, and automotive labeling that deliver on the company’s message of performance driven solutions. FLEXcon said print service providers and end users can expect exceptional printability and robust adhesion from FLEXcon pharmaceutical labeling products for a variety of applications, ranging from small diameter vials and syringes to large diameter over-the-counter medicine containers, as well as cover-up, tamper-evidence and blood bag applications. In addition, products for FDA Class I, II and III medical devices or device packages are available.

Siegwerk exhibited at Labelexpo its latest ink innovations for sustainable and efficient printing of labels and packaging. The company also gave insights into its growing range of sustainable solutions for optimized packaging recyclability in the sense of a circular economy. Guido Lander, VP business unit Narrow Web EMEA at Siegwerk, said, “Visitors have not only been able to learn more about our latest solutions for boosting efficiency and sustainability, but have also gotten hands-on insights into selected specialty products and inkjet solutions for label and package printing.”


Michelman featured its inline and off-line primers, overprint varnishes, and strengtheners explicitly formulated for use in HP Indigo digital presses. Michelman’s solutions are water-based and enhance the sustainability of printed materials by allowing printing on a wide variety of substrates, including those created from recycled or renewably-sourced materials. This versatility helps press owners minimize substrate waste, expand into new markets, and ultimately grow their businesses.

Cartes presented six innovative machines for high-end printing and converting, as well as finishing and embellishment of self-adhesive labels. The attendees interested in the technology visiting the booth were above expectations, the company said. In addition, Cartes was the winner of the Technological Innovation Award at the Label Industry Global Awards 2023 for its fully automated end-to-end digital finishing line, which integrates Jet D-Screen digital finishing with tool-less metallic doming and laser converting. “Receiving this award has been a terrific satisfaction, a recognition of years of passion and hard work done by a great staff, which is truly much more than a team – it is a wonderful family.  A dream pursued hardly without ever wavering or giving up, an achievement that belongs to all the amazing people who have written and every day write the history of Cartes,” said Enrica Lodi, marketing manager.

For the first time in Europe, Flexo Wash presented the FW 850 laser anilox cleaner. The FW 850 series models clean up to two narrow web rolls in one cycle and can be installed without water supply, drain, or safety equipment. The system can handle aniloxes up to 7″ in diameter, 27.6″ length, as well as 110 pounds in weight. Flexo Wash products will extend the life of anilox rolls and sleeves, gravure cylinders, flexo plates, flexo plate sleeves, press parts and rotary screens, while decreasing the make-ready downtime between job runs.

Phoseon, an Excelitas Technologies Company, exhibited its latest UV LED curing solutions. Booth visitors learned how LED technology is a perfect fit for printing applications due to ease of integration, low energy consumption, and high intensity UV output achieved through optimized LED thermal management. The Nexus ONE air- and water-cooled UV LED curing systems are ideally suited for flexographic printing applications, delivering the best performing solution in the industry, the company said. With 2.5 times more LED diodes than competitive products and patented thermal management techniques, Nexus ONE products deliver the highest total UV power output to achieve increased print speeds, increased press uptime, and double the product lifetime.

Epson demonstrated its SurePress digital label presses – the L-6534VW and L-4733AW – as well as ColorWorks on-demand color label printers. “Epson’s labeling solutions help businesses respond to the demands of the moment – faster turnaround times, shorter runs, and lowering labor costs with automation,” stated Victor Gomez, director, Epson America. With a remarkable color gamut, SurePress digital label presses deliver accurate spot colors and gradients required for brand-quality color prime labels and packaging. The SurePress L-6543VW with Orange Ink has a 92% Pantone coverage certification within Delta E of 1.5. A vertically integrated design with Epson-manufactured components, including ink, printheads, LED pinning and curing, SurePress offers stable and predictable production. All SurePress models are Pantone certified.

Label Traxx showcased its popular MIS/ERP solutions for the labels and flexible packaging segments of the printing industry. Label Traxx optimized the user experience of its MIS/ERP solution with Version 9, as well as incorporated Siteline and Batched into its software ecosystem. In 2023, Label Traxx has launched Cloud API, Data Warehouse, Siteline Sales Portal/CRM, Batched Automated Scheduling enhancements, and the Enterprise version of the company’s product. Siteline Sales Portal/CRM gives sales reps a means to contribute from any connected device.

Prati showcaed its DIGIFASTone digital finishing line. The product range is based on the company’s Futura field-upgradable open platform technology. The line is fully digital, from inkjet module to laser diecutting and turret rewind, and offers the capability to produce short-run promotional labels in the food and beverage, wine and spirits, cosmetics, personal care and home care sectors. “Run lengths are becoming shorter and shorter, and at the same time the quality requirements are increasing,” explained Frank Hasselberg, president, Prati USA. DIGIFASTone can produce tactile effects and textures, decorations and textures up to 130 meters, and Braille and Marburg Medium printing for pharmaceutical products. The system generates low waste, reduces setup times, and offers a register accuracy of 0.15mm.

Baldwin Technology Co. Inc. addressed the importance of color and inspection, achieving the right tension of substrates and solidifying inks and coatings onto substrates at fast speeds. Additionally, Baldwin allows convertors to address challenges related to static control and web cleaning with exacting standards. “As a global sole provider of print-enhanced technology, it’s great to meet with current and potential customers here on the show floor and explore how we can successfully collaborate to deliver exceptional ROI with optimized systems,” said Oliver Jentschke, Baldwin’s vice president of sales for Europe.


Kocher+Beck had an interactive booth, which was built using sustainable materials and will be reused over several shows in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint. The GapMaster EM (Electronic Move) was the product highlight, introducing a servo-driven system – the only system on the market to offer both adjustments by a rotary dial and digital input with haptic feedback for the operator. From TecScreen, advancements have been made to the popular processing unit. The unit now has the function to store and recycle water, another example of Kocher+Beck’s strides toward sustainability.

Delta ModTech showcased on-demand converting on its newly updated Crusader Converter. This system features a precision RFID antennae placement application, as well as a variety of processes like rotary diecutting, winding, conveying and precise part placement. “With the RFID mandates that have been imposed by Walmart and other retailers, precision and accurate insertion of tags and antennas into labels is a hot topic,” said Dave Grenwis, marketing manager, Delta ModTech. “With the increase of projects in this area, our RFID tag insertion modules continue to evolve. Using our patented Island Transfer process, Delta ModTech machines are capable of inserting under label tags at high speeds, up to 2,500 parts per minute. Our machines are also capable of UHF and HF encoding and either wet or dry inlay, depending on your application.” A specific demo on RFID antennae placement is just one of the processes that the Crusader is capable of through Delta ModTech’s modular technology.

At Labelexpo, Infigo revealed details about its new MIS integration, Connect: Cerm. The partnership between the two web-to-print vendors is helping converters capitalize on the growing print e-commerce market. As Cerm is a specialist in the labels and packaging space, it means that Infigo is able to create a solution specifically for the labels sector, from the ground up – based on input and guidance from some of the biggest names in the industry. Alex Bowell, Infigo technical operations director, said, “We looked at many of the leading MIS solutions out there, but instantly knew that there was a standout partner that we wanted to work with, for many reasons, and that was Cerm.”

Xitron debuted its latest version of Navigator Flexo Suite. New to the application is an integrated module allowing operators to access and change SmartFlexo screening configurations on the fly through a simple browser interface. SmartFlexo is a hybrid screening engine designed specifically for the special screening issues faced by flexo printers across all processes. It allows individual configurations of minimum dot, transition points between AM and FM screening – in highlights as well as shadows – optional inclusion of support dots in highlight areas, and pixel removal in solid and near-solid areas for improved solid ink density based on press, plate, and substrate conditions.

Sun Chemical presented its growing range of sustainable solutions for the labels and flexible packaging industries at Labelexpo Europe 2023, highlighting what the company says is its unique position as a provider of inks, coatings, adhesives, packaging design, color management and sustainability analysis. Based on a “5R” (Reuse, Reduce, Renew, Recycle, and Redesign) sustainability framework and associated product portfolio, Sun Chemical aims to help packaging producers and converters to drive their businesses forward in a more environmentally sustainable way.

Dow highlighted its portfolio of next-generation silicone release coatings, acrylics, hot melt and silicone adhesives that are enabling label performance in a circular economy. As part of Dow’s commitment to delivering a sustainable future for the world through materials science, Dow launched at the show SYL-OFF Protect – a carbon neutral selection of SYL-OFF silicone release coatings. Certified by an independent third party according to PAS 2060, these products offer the same quality and performance customers in the label industry expect from standard SYL-OFF silicone release coatings, with the added benefit of a reduced carbon footprint.


Nilpeter presented its take on “The Future of Flexo.” Attendees observed Nilpeter’s FA-26 and FA-17 presses, touted as featuring outstanding performance in short-run flexible packaging and labels. According to Nilpeter, the FA-26 redefines industry standards with excellent inline printing capabilities for various applications. Designed with a robust construction and innovative features, it ensures high-quality prints at any speed. Nilpeter also showcased the FA-17, a key component of the FA-Line. Visitors witnessed the latest advancements and features of the versatile flexo press, including the Digital Varnish Bar, designed to seamlessly replace traditional varnishing techniques.

Bobst promoted its wide range of digital and flexo solutions at Labelexpo Europe. Under the motto, “Simplifying label production,” Bobst demonstrated its product suite in labels and flexible packaging production with two main production lines in focus. The Bobst Digital Master 340 All-in-One modular and upgradable label press, equipped with the latest UV inkjet technology, was running live at 100 m/m. Visitors were able to see how Bobst’s Accucheck system, which comes as standard on this machine, performs 100% inline quality control at full speed. The full configuration also included flexo modules and a highly automated diecutting unit to showcase true end-to-end label production.

Domino featured two popular products at its Labelexpo Europe booth: the N730i digital UV inkjet label press along with the K600i variable data printer integrated with the new K300. The N730i digital UV inkjet label press prints at 1200 dpi with BITSTAR printhead technology. It is configurable in up to seven colors (CMYKOVW) and can achieve up to 92% of the Pantone color range. The N730i has an optional flexo priming station (pre-digital), which can be retrofitted to optimize print quality on more difficult media types. An optional flexo station (post-digital) can be retrofitted to support varnishing, a brand spot color, or flood white for shrink sleeve applications. The K600i allows variable data printing at up to 492 fpm and the ability to print serial, batch, random, or PINs; alphanumeric characters; variable images; linear barcodes; 2D matrix, or QR codes. In addition, Domino’s latest digital technology was running live at the booth, with the unveiling of real-time online ripping also taking place.

Avery Dennison launched AD LinrSave and AD LinrConvert – the first generation of decorative linerless solutions enabled by patented micro-perforation technology. These products aim to greatly reduce label waste, decrease CO2 and water footprint while ensuring the functionality and shelf appeal of pressure sensitive labels. This marks the next stage of the Avery Dennison innovation journey, enabling the industry to drive to a more sustainable and connected future. Wayne Middleton, senior Linerless Segment lead EMENA at Avery Dennison, commented, “AD LinrSave and AD LinrConvert are easily integrated into existing equipment, and with up to 80% more labels per roll it means more efficient runs and fewer changeovers. These more sustainable linerless labels can easily and accurately be applied on a wide range of packaging types used in sectors including food and beverage, wine and spirits plus home and personal care.”


Sihl presented new facestocks for the Artysio Flexible Packaging and Tags segments. In the label facestock area, Sihl exhibited Picofilm WO-80 matt ZM1 (8002) and Picofilm WO-110 matt ZM1 (8003) for the first time. The ZM1 coating is a new matte, highly resistant coating for water-based inkjet printing. It is also resistant to a wide range of chemicals and at the same time shows a high-quality print image. This makes the products suitable for many demanding label applications, for example in home and personal care, pharmaceutical applications or in the oil and chemical industries.

INX International Ink Co. introduced its Coloring a Safe and Sustainable Future (CSSF) model to improve sustainability performance and help brand owners address their circular economy objectives. Cleo Nomikos, vice president of sales for INX Europe, said, “INX can help because we have global-based technology platforms and local-based manufacturing that actively adapts to customer demands,” he explained. “We address the market and regulatory challenges for sustainable solutions, and understand the desire for lower applied costs.” INXFlex Contour and Genesis washable inks, as well as EcoStage GB-XA Oxygen Barrier coatings, are some of the sustainable solutions Nomikos mentioned that were featured at the show and benefit brand owners in their efforts to recycle and meet regulatory standards.

Konica Minolta highlighted its software and service capabilities, as well as latest hardware. Developed with Danish-based Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM), Konica Minolta showcased the full production workflow for the label converting and packaging industry. On display was the new AccurioLabel 400 single-pass digital press, which has benefits such as running cost reductions and the ability to expand applications with white toner. The toner press offers improved productivity with superfast print speeds of up to almost 40 m/m. It is available in 4- and 5-color configurations.

Meech International unveiled its headline product, the Hyperion 650QAC at Labelexpo Europe 2023. This Quasi AC (QAC) Ionizing Bar offers a flexible and adjustable solution for effective ionization in various production environments. The new product’s QAC high voltage waveform generates positive and negative ions from each emitter pin, delivering rapid ionization with very low offset voltage. Equipped with auto balancing technology, the 650QAC ensures consistent performance. Designed for RFID tag production, the 650QAC bar controls static charges in unwinding, printing, drying, and rewinding processes, preventing catastrophic failure and latent defects.

ACTEGA exhibited a wide range of its latest innovations, including its haptic effect coating series, LED-UV coatings, white and metallic inks, and ACTEGA’s Ecoleaf metallization technology. One of the key highlights of ACTEGA’s was live demonstrations of Ecoleaf, the sustainable alternative to traditional metallic decoration. This technology enables printers and converters to significantly reduce the environmental impact of metallic decoration on labels and packaging while maintaining the aesthetics and quality standards required by brands. With a working press and metallization unit running throughout the show, visitors were able to see the technology first-hand, with a range of printed samples also on display, highlighting the versatility of the finished embellishments.


Visitors to the UPM Raflatac booth experienced the PureCycle label wash-off qualities in action in a wash-off demonstration. The PureCycle paper label wash-off solutions are designed to enhance PET and HDPE recycling. Visitors also discovered UPM Raflatac’s Ocean Action label material made with Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) waste. Ocean Action – the world’s first certified label material to fight ocean bound plastic pollution does not only help prevent plastic waste from ending up in the oceans, but also offers brand owners the possibility to meet their recycled content targets for packaging as an easy-to-use, drop-in solution created especially for home and personal care, food, and beverage end uses.

Kurz presented various solutions from the areas of hot stamping, cold transfer, digital embellishment and sustainability. Its latest digital embellishment systems are the Kurz DM-Uniliner 2D and the DM-Uniliner 3D from Kurz subsidiary Steinemann DPE. The Distorun module, a material-saving cold transfer unit, enables efficient single-image application and provides more flexibility. Cold transfer serves as a substitute for laminates and thanks to innovative Kurz solutions, it has become even more sustainable and efficient, among other things by reducing the carrier thickness to 6µm.

XSYS exhibited the ThermoFlexX TFxX 30 and larger 48 model plate imagers, which attracted great interest. The ThermoFlexX 48 could be seen connected to the new Catena-E 48 LED exposure unit, demonstrating how automation is changing the platemaking process. XSYS also displayed its broad range of flexographic and letterpress plates for label and packaging production, along with the rotec portfolio of adapters and sleeves, including the Smart Premium and Smart Sleeves, Eco Xtra Ring for adapters, and associated upgrade program.

Maxcess highlighted products from RotoMetrics, Fife, Tidland, Maxcess Vision Systems, and Componex – brands touted as offering precise, sustainable, and productive solutions to work better, faster and smarter. RotoMetrics presented its new flexible die portfolio, which makes it easy to find the right die for converters’ specific application for better press performance – no matter the liner. Plus, RotoMetrics’ RotoScan Intelligent Die Station was on display. This product provides accurate control for variability while giving label and tag converters Industry 4.0 analytics to run smarter. Experts were on-hand to discuss Tidland’s RD AutoScore, which Maxcess defines as a “game-changing” scoring system that delivers excellent efficiency and fully automated lateral and depth control. These attributes reduce setup time while increasing operator safety.

The theme at Wink’s Labelexpo Europe booth was “The Art of Diecutting,” where the company’s primary objective was to create an inspiring and enjoyable atmosphere. The motto highlighted the intersection between diecutting and art on various levels. On one hand, it emphasizes the craftsmanship involved in selecting the perfect die-cutting tool for diverse applications, resulting in eye-catching outcomes that captivate customers at the point of sale. Dennis Meijlink, marketing manager, said, “We are very proud of our high delivery reliability (more than 99%). We have maintained this figure at a consistently high level since the beginning of the year. Additionally, we have further improved the cutting line geometries of our flexible dies. We’ve got very positive feedback from clients diecutting on extremely thin liners.”

GEW highlighted its full product range, with a focus on its air-cooled UV LED system AeroLED, which was unveiled in 2022. AeroLED’s simplicity of design, reliability and energy efficiency are hallmarks of the new technology. AeroLED is a high power system for full cure, printing, coating and converting applications up to 60cm wide. Using the same fan and ducting arrangement as GEW’s industry standard E2C system, printers can have total flexibility to switch between arc and LED curing on any station. This arc and LED compatibility makes an AeroLED retrofit more cost effective than ever before and customers with GEW’s Rhino/RLT power supply platform can upgrade to LED in under an hour by simply changing the cassettes and running a software upgrade.

Fujifilm highlighted the Jet Press FP790 digital flexible packaging press, via a demonstration run live from Fujifilm’s beta customer in the UK. Built on decades of Fujifilm inkjet expertise, the Jet Press FP790 features water-based inkjet technology, making it suitable for food packaging production. Fujifilm’s flagship toner-based production press in the Revoria range, the Revoria PC1120, was also demonstrated live at the show. Progressively launched throughout Europe over the past two years, it features an advanced print engine with 10 colors, including gold, silver, white, pink and clear, easily configurable in six before and after CMYK stations.

Lintec Europe launched labelstock products that include material that improves the recyclability of PET bottles and a direct thermal paper that can be used as an alternative to synthetic products at Labelexpo Europe 2023. MMP Mono Material Polyester (PET) is designed for application to polyester packaging such as single-use water bottles. The clear film features a strong yet removable adhesive and features two additional key advantages when compared to conventional labeling films. The film and adhesive are manufactured from polyester, so if any labels are not removed before the washing and grinding process the risk of contamination is reduced. A special topcoating also enables the labels to be de-inked via a typical 1.5% alkaline at a 70°C washing process.

Arrow Systems and Katun Corporation announced the expansion of their European partnership. As part of the collaboration, Katun will open an Experience Center in Tiel, the Netherlands, following the show. “This new state-of-the-art Experience Center will allow European customers to demo the latest in water-based pigment inkjet technology,” stated Shaan Patel, business development manager, Arrow Systems, adding that the facility will feature the ArrowJet Hybrid Pro, ArrowJet Lite, and EZCut 330R. The ArrowJet Aqua 330R Hybrid Pro features inline priming and varnish allowing customers to prime and varnish their material inline with the same print quality as pre-coated material.

Durst introduced Durst Hawk Eye technology that utilizes computer vision and artificial intelligence. It is designed to assist operators and automate the print quality. In addition, it significantly reduces setup time and waste, resulting in enhanced efficiency and a more competitive total cost of ownership (TCO) for the RSC platform of printers. Martin Leitner, product manager of Durst Group, said, “This technology will greatly increase productivity and efficiency, but more importantly, it will reduce waste and the carbon footprint of our customers.” Durst also presented live demos of the Tau 510 RSCi single pass press, which was equipped with new automation features. The press being run was equipped with the double white feature, allowing excellent opacity white ink printing at 80 m/m.


Labelexpo marked the European trade show debut of the new Gallus One digital label press, which was launched in August 2022 and is specifically designed to remove the total cost of ownership (TCO) barrier for the adoption of reel-to-reel digital labels. Further optimizing the TCO benefits, Gallus recently launched the new Gallus One with Converting. This new solution brings everything inline, featuring a digital printer with an inline flexo station, a semi-rotary diecutter that can change a job within one minute and process up to 70 m/m, and vision inspection systems to ensure the highest level of quality and minimize waste. Gallus also highlighted the newly available digital printing unit (DPU) for the Gallus ECS 340 flexo press.

LemuGroup featured three new machines for label roll manufacturing and digital embellishment: LI 220 RFID, MA 350+GTU and GTU 440 with a boxing system. Visitors had the opportunity to see customized demonstrations of LemuGroup’s equipment running live at the show. “How to produce the same or more products with fewer people is the pinnacle issue that I find people are researching and trying to solve economically in today’s industry,” explained Andre Beaudoin, director of North American sales and marketing, LemuGroup USA. “We are also finding that by incorporating higher speeds and tying in end-of-line automation, there has been a reduction in waste, which is always created when human interplay is involved. An example of this is when product has been converted, as that product then needs to be moved to a second rewinding process and then finally packaging. With high-speed converting/inline packaging, we have eliminated the waste factor. At these speeds, people cannot keep up with the packaging and palletizing part of their throughput. With our new technology, daily productivity increases 40% on average.”

Omet ran live demos on its new KFLEX flexo printing machine while also showcasing its printing capabilities on the XJet hybrid flexo+inkjet press. The company has optimized solutions for flexo, digital, offset and gravure printing technologies, with the capability to provide all these printing technologies in single pass combination printing systems. In addition, Omet showed booth visitors its capability of printing on 12 micron mono films, such as PET, PVC/PET shrink, BOPP, IML, foils, etc., to 600 micron paper-based packaging such as cartons, paper cups and liquid packaging. Omet experts have been covering the wide gamut of packaging materials on which the company has found success.


GM (Grafisk Maskinfabrik) displayed the full force of its advanced finishing solutions for digitally printed labels at Labelexpo Europe 2023. The Danish manufacturer demonstrated 10 machines at the show,
all designed to streamline the converting process and empower converters to finish first. The spotlight at the booth was shining on the highly automated DC350Flex+ Wine line for premium label embellishment. Designed for adding maximum value to digital labels for luxury markets, particularly wine, spirits, cosmetics, and beauty, it is particularly noteworthy for its exceptional foiling, embossing capabilities and striking digital varnish effects.

In addition to its presence on the Labelexpo show floor, Flint Group also participated in the Automation Arena, a full “lights out” production workflow from file creation to digital printing, converting and inspection. The company also participated in the Flex Pack Trail, a market showcase that connects the label and flexible packaging value chains.  Additionally, Flint Group presented during the Label Academy Master Class on the topic of Sustainable Labels and Packaging.

Screen debuted an inline digital primer prototype for the Truepress L350UV SAI Label digital printing press. This feature addresses the challenge of poor ink adhesion on various substrates by incorporating a digital primer directly into the press. According to Screen, this solution could deliver superior ink adhesion and better printing quality. Visitors at Labelexpo were able to witness this technology first-hand, seeing the impact on label printing. Screen also demonstrated the Truepress PAC520P inkjet digital printing press for paper packaging, responding to the growing trend of replacing plastic packaging with environmentally friendly paper alternatives.
BST featured the BST TubeScan Eagle View, which delivers 100% inspection plus 10x magnification in video inspection. The feature is an additional 5 megapixel camera to zoom in on any web section of 35 x 25 mm with a pixel resolution of 14 µm. This capability enables seamless visualization of the dot screen, making it advantageous for monitoring the print register or RFID applications. The detail camera on the BST Tubescan Eagle View is traversing and can be positioned easily over the web using a touch screen. In addition, all TubeScan illumination options are available. For example, 100% inspection can be performed under white light,and the detail view can be illuminated with UV light.

SEI Laser, the laser converting specialist, highlighted Labelmaster, which is the company’s flagship narrow web (350mm) and medium-web (600 mm) laser diecutting and finishing system. For the first time in the world, Labelmaster presented KyoJet: the new high-resolution digital UV inkjet inline solution manufactured by SEI Laser. Labelmaster and KyoJet represent what the company says is the only single-pass system, from PDF to shipping, in the label market. Labelmaster and KyoJet optimize the web to label concept to the highest level – everything is digital, online, and performed in a single step without any operator activity.

Mitsubishi HiTec Paper presented new coated specialty papers, including thermoscript thermal papers and jetscript inkjet papers for label applications, as well as barricote barrier papers for flexible packaging of food and non-food products. Highlights were Pure for Label, a new thermal paper without chemical developers for label applications. With a basis weight of 67 gsm, the paper offers high dynamic sensitivity and maximum resistance to environmental influences. The printed image can be archived for 40 years. A special feature is how the opaque functional layer reacts physically to heat so that the black layer underneath becomes visible and releases the printed image.


Anytron unveiled the new ANY-PRESS at Labelexpo Europe. This compact 13″ label and packaging press features an advanced five-color dry toner press with dual functionality for digital labels and flexible packaging. Its LED engine ensures enhanced durability and reliable performance, making it the perfect choice for customers seeking a capable printer. Designed as an all-in-one solution, ANY-PRESS enables easy production of labels and pouches with its built-in laminator and wide 13″ format. The addition of white toner support allows for sharper images and text on colored papers, including kraft and transparent labels.

PPG showcased its portfolio of durable PPG Teslin label materials for adhesive coaters, packaging specialists, and label converters. Teslin substrate is a durable, secure, and easy-to-print synthetic material that excels in label applications that demand a tough, high-performance solution. The substrate absorbs inks, toners, adhesives, and coatings, locking them into its structure for long-lasting durability and security with no additional processing or expense. It is also flexible and conformable, enabling long-lasting adhesion to cylindrical items and other tough to label surfaces.

RK PrintCoat Instruments, a prepress color communication specialist, exhibited its award-winning FlexiProof 100 machine incorporating the custom designed LED UV unit, an alternative to the dichroic mercury arc vapor lamps currently provided. The main components of this machine are identical to a standard flexographic press. FlexiProof 100 utilizes a doctored ceramic anilox roller and a photopolymer plate, and, with a maximum speed of 100 m/m, realistic printability testing can be undertaken on all types of flexo substrates.

Visitors to the Martin Automatic booth were able to experience more than 140 live machine demonstrations. The popular MBS non-stop automatic butt splicer and LRD non-stop automatic transfer rewinder provided the focus of attention for visitors – each displayed with ergonomic, space saving considerations requested by Krämer Druck, the end user located in the Mosel valley, at whose facility the equipment was installed immediately following the exhibition. This is the second set of Martin non-stop automation technology on a label press that combines various processes at Krämer Druck, which specializes in the production of wine and spirits labels. Martin’s “Keep It Simple (KIS)” philosophy of machine design was on display as visitors interacted with the machines – often participating in splice preparation and splice initiation.

“We do our best not only to inform but also to immerse customers in the Martin experience,” said Gavin Rittmeyer, vice president of sales and marketing, adding, “And from the looks of satisfaction and expressions of delight, I believe that we achieved these goals.”

And the Winners are…

Winners of the Label Industry Global Awards 2023 were announced during the first evening of Labelexpo Europe at Brussels Expo.

Now in its 18th edition, the Label Industry Global Awards recognize those organizations and individuals who have excelled in the label and package printing sector through innovation and personal example.

The Label Industry Global Awards 2023 judging panel consisted of Greg Hrinya, editor of Label & Narrow Web; Philippe Voet, president of FINAT; Tim McDonough, TLMI chairman; Chelsea McDougall, editor of Labels & Labeling; and Jean Poncet, editor of Etiq & Pack. The judging panel was chaired by Andy Thomas-Emans, strategic director of the Labels & Packaging Group, Tarsus.

This year, there were a total of seven awards: the Global Achievement Award, the New Global Team Achievement Award, the Innovation Award (for companies with up to 300 employees), the Innovation Award (for companies with more than 300 employees) the Rising Star Award, the Sustainability Award and Converter of the Year.

The Team Achievement Award was introduced for the first time and was awarded to Mercian Labels and its partners Screen, Cerm and ABG for their 6-year “lights-out” converting project. The award recognizes the critical importance of teamwork and is open to industry suppliers, converters and end users.

Lintec Corporation won the Innovation Award for companies with more than 300 employees. This award is for the development of a specific innovation by a supplier or converter company in 2022.

The Label Awards judging panel said, “Lintec impressed the judges with its new polyester-based adhesive, which will greatly assist in the development of a circular materials economy by assisting in the clean separation of PET container waste.”

The winner of the Innovation Award for companies with up to 300 employees went to Italian finishing equipment manufacturer Cartes, which impressed the judges with its fully automated end-to-end digital embellishment line, which integrates inkjet embellishment, digital metallization and laser diecutting modules.

Tommy Schouten won the Rising Star Award. The judges were impressed with his drive and passion for process optimization and continuous improvement, which marked him out as a future industry leader.

The Sustainability Award went to UPM Raflatac, for the company’s Ocean Action Label, made from ocean bound plastic, which is a major step toward creating a real commercial market for plastic waste.


The Converter of the Year Award was won by Baker Labels. The judges were impressed with the culture of the company, which encourages among its 112 staff a passion for continuous learning, inclusivity, and an active participation in a wide range of charitable and local community initiatives.

The final award, the prestigious Global Achievement Award, went to GEW founder Malcolm Rae. The Global Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has made a key contribution to the promotion and growth of the label industry, and has been a high-profile industry influencer and motivator.

The Label Awards judging panel commented, “Malcolm Rae is a worthy winner of the Global Achievement Award. This recognizes his unique contribution, through GEW, the company he founded, to the narrow web industry’s transition to UV curing and to the subsequent technological development of the UV curing industry.”

Andy Thomas-Emans, chair of the judging panel, remarked, “We have been very impressed by the high quality of entries received for this year’s Label Industry Global Awards. I would like to thank everybody who submitted nominations and on behalf of the judging panel, I would like to congratulate all the winners and finalists.
