During TLMI’s printTHINK Summit, Esteban Garcia explained how label converters can reduce costs and waste with proper technology.

During the final session of TLMI’s printTHINK Summit, members learned about the many benefits of the newest MIS solutions. On June 18, 2025, Esteban Garcia, business development manager, CERM, explored how the right product can pay significant dividends for label converters.
In fact, the newest MIS products boast the power to unlock operational efficiencies. “We all work on trying to be as lean and efficient as possible, because it’s so important for all of us to do more with less,” stated Garcia. “Automation is huge, especially with job costing. It’s important to understand what customers are ordering and when. To be able to have that information and not spend too much time putting it together is key. That’s one of the biggest challenges we hear from users and prospects. You want an MIS that can give you that information in real time.”
The modern MIS performs several functions. These include reducing human touch and error; providing real-time KPI dashboards for every department; standardizing your process and reducing the manual steps; and creating better inventory and supply chain visibility.
With the advancement of technology, label converters have more information at their disposal than ever before. However, utilizing the data correctly is paramount.
“Most of us understand that waste is one of our biggest challenges, and it’s important to understand what your real inventory is and where your consumption is,” noted Garcia. “That can help you learn what to focus on in your business.”
The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is intertwined with data capabilities. But, the user needs to ask the right questions to optimize the available data sets.
“AI is not meant to replace software solutions and processes; it’s meant to complement it,” commented Garcia. “AI can help optimize your production schedules, and it’s being generated from the data you’re gathering from various departments like production and customer service. The technology is going to help you enhance decision-making, but it’s going to be powered by the information you’re providing. It’s not a replacement, just helping you utilize the tools you have to be more efficient.
“AI is all driven by asking the right questions,” adds Garcia. “CERM is working toward enhancing the data you can feed into a solution with AI, to create the proper perspective and gather the right information.”
By examining the processes of a business, a converter can optimize efficiency by ensuring employees and departments are avoiding unnecessary steps. In addition, the right data can show where employees are being underutilized.
According to Garcia, there are a host of benefits to installing new MIS systems. New MIS provides centralized data logging for ISO and other industry standards, as well as automated traceability – from raw materials to delivery. Plus, new software enables easier documentation for compliance audits while also reducing preparation time and risk of non-compliance.
MIS provides significant cost benefits, too. CERM’s research showcases a real-world ROI with the newest products. For example, CERM has seen a 30% reduction in production planning time and 20% improvement in on-time deliveries. Converters can expect an ROI in under 12 months, too.
“At the end of the day, you’re working with something that will help you in the future,” said Garcia. “Today’s market demands smart, fast, and traceable data. The right MIS solution turns this data into your most valuable asset.”
Some converters might be running materials or inks that are more costly. In this case, CERM’s Scheduling Module can identify the costly parts of the job and see how it could be performed in the best way.
“CERM works backwards, too,” remarked Garcia. “You get an order and the customer expects it by a certain date. CERM will start with when the order needs to ship and then works backwards. The project will be scheduled the most efficient way to meet those dates and times. If a job is running into problematic timing, that will be highlighted. It’s important to have a visual that helps you understand where you are with certain jobs.
“I really get excited because understanding what’s going on in real time is what allows you to make the decisions that help your company win,” Garcia concludes.
