In an increasingly competitive marketplace, label and packaging converters are under pressure to deliver more to brand owners: faster, better, and at lower cost. L&NW recently caught up with Mike Barry, National Sales Manager, Digital Printing at Domino, to explore how the N610i-R digital retrofit module is helping converters evolve their business by adding digital printing capability without adding footprint.

L&NW: What is the N610i-R, and why is it a game-changer?

MB: Domino N610i-R is a compact digital retrofit module that mounts directly onto an existing flexographic press, providing a versatile 3-in-1 solution for hybrid printing, digital-only printing, or flexo-only printing. So, it allows converters to transform their analog equipment into a hybrid printing solution, adding the speed, versatility, and customization of digital without replacing their current setup — or without requiring more floor space. This gives converters a powerful way to enter or expand into digital printing while protecting their investment in their flexo assets.

L&NW: How does it help converters stay competitive?

MB: By integrating digital printing capability into an existing flexo press, the N610i-R gives converters more for less. Domino N610i-R provides 600dpi CMYK + White, allowing for versioning, variable data printing, personalization, quick job changeovers, and more. This means shorter make-ready time, less setup waste, the ability to handle multi-SKU jobs more efficiently, and shorter lead time and delivery to the customer. The N610i-R is also offered on Mark Andy flexo presses through Mark Andy as the DSiQ-R.

L&NW: What type of installations benefit most from N610i-R?

MB: The N610i-R is ideal for a broad range of applications — from high-quality product labels to unique applications, including specialty and security printing, brand protection, and promotional materials. It’s particularly effective for applications requiring multiple SKUs, personalization, or frequent design changes.

With the N610i-R, converters can produce premium labels with high-opacity white ink that mimics the appearance of screen printing, all through a digital process.

L&NW: How does this solution impact productivity and costs?

MB: Hybrid printing with the N610i-R reduces plate costs and setup waste, enabling converters to shift more short-run and versioned work to digital. With print speeds up to 230 fpm and the flexibility to switch between digital-only, flexo-only, or hybrid printing, converters can maximize press uptime and throughput — without needing to buy or house an entirely separate digital press. In fact, converters will also likely free up additional capacity on their other presses, as well.

L&NW: What’s the long-term value for converters?

MB: The N610i-R offers more than just immediate print flexibility — it’s a way to future-proof your business. As demand grows for faster turnaround, versioning, and customization, having a digital press allows converters to adapt quickly. With no need to expand facility size, or worry about adding additional footprint, they gain a competitive edge while keeping capital expenditures and operational disruptions to a minimum. It allows converters to implement digital printing at a lower cost entry point, while providing a great value proposition for them to go after and acquire new customers and increase their revenue.
