While M&A is all the rage these days in the label and package printing industry, not every converter is eager to link up with private equity or a national conglomerate. Steinhauser, Inc., which is based in the Greater Cincinnati, OH/Northern Kentucky area, has prided itself on its culture and independence since 1905 – and the company has no plans of changing that core philosophy.

Steinhauser, a fourth-generation, 100% woman-owned printing company, is proudly celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2025. According to Tara Halpin, CEO and owner, fourth-generation ownership has dedicated itself to the family legacy. The company has not been shy about investing in cutting-edge digital and UV flexographic printing technology to provide its customers with high-quality prime label solutions. This forward-thinking has positioned the company for a strong future, as well.

Steinhauser has been built on a storied legacy, and independence allows ownership to drive a strong company culture with the freedom to make split-second decisions. This mantra has translated to significant growth. Steinhauser has achieved an average 19% year-over-year growth since 2019, reinforcing its position as a leader in premium label printing.

“Our independence is the throughline of our history,” says Halpin. “Being family-owned for more than 120 years has kept us rooted in our values while giving us the freedom to evolve. Every major decision has been made with the long-term health of the company and our employees in mind, not outside shareholders.

“There are so many benefits in retaining our independence,” she continues. “It means we can make decisions quickly, allowing us to treat each customer uniquely and pivot on a dime. It also keeps us close to the work, and because we aren’t managing layers of bureaucracy, we’re focused on our customers and our quality.”

Emphasizing relationships

Halpin has also emphasized relationships. Steinhauser has emerged as a key pillar at industry events like TLMI. She works closely with suppliers to ensure success for the company and her customers.

“We have long-term collaborative relationships with many of our suppliers, which are essential to meet our customers’ needs,” states Halpin. “We lean heavily on our suppliers and hold them to a high standard. We foster great communication with an emphasis on critical thinking, solutions-based problem solving, and technical expertise.

“TLMI and other industry associations are invaluable to our collective success,” she adds. “Most converters keep things close to the vest, but these organizations really promote sharing and trust. It allows us to stay up to date with current technology and be aware of changes in the industry.”

In addition to relationships with key suppliers and other industry leaders, Halpin has prioritized her relationship with her team. “Being independent allows employees to get to know and trust leadership,” explains Halpin. “It also gives us the ability to be flexible with schedules so people can put their families first. Independence creates a workplace where individuals matter, and that shows in the culture we’ve built.”
