Graymills Corporation has announced that Kristen Shields, president, has been named the TLMI Supplier of the Year. TLMI presents the award annually, and it celebrates exceptional leadership, innovation, and meaningful contributions to the global label and packaging community.
Shields was recognized during TLMI’s Annual Awards Ceremony during the Annual meeting. There, peers across the industry applauded her long-standing commitment to strengthening American manufacturing and advancing the next generation of talent.
“This honor reflects Kristen’s leadership in the industry and her passion for developing the next generation of workers,” says Tasha Ventimiglia, Americas Group Director, LOUPE.
“Kristen has become a well-known figure in the labels and packaging world. Not only is she an advocate for US manufacturers, but she is a widely respected advocate who has been a fantastic mentor to women in the printing industry,” adds Ventimiglia. “She’s been instrumental in revising our organization’s scholarship application and process and continues to lead with fresh ideas and actions that make a difference. Her dedication, leadership, passion and kindness inspire us all.”
Shields grew up in the label and package printing industry. In 1990, she began working at Graymills—the company owned by her family since 1980.
Today, along with her brother Craig Shields, who serves as the company’s CEO, Kristen leads a 50-employee operation in a 125,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Broadview, IL. Under her leadership, Graymills continues to develop innovative ink pumps, metalworking pumps, and parts washers critical to high-quality label and package printing.
Though she once never envisioned herself running the company, Shields has embraced the role with energy and vision. She has championed new product development, expanded industry partnerships, and strengthened the company’s reputation for engineering excellence.
Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Shields is recognized nationally as a leading advocate for workforce development in manufacturing. She actively supports internships, trade school partnerships, and career-pathway programs that introduce young people – especially young woman – to careers in printing and manufacturing.
“Workforce development is something I’m truly passionate about,” Shields says. “We work with local high schools and colleges to show students that manufacturing offers strong, rewarding career opportunities. Although it’s very much male dominated, there are tremendous opportunities for women in this field.”
Shields is deeply involved with the FTA’s Women in Flexo program and the Illinois Manufacturers’ Women Makers group. These groups provide the opportunity to mentor emerging female leaders. The Makers group is a powerful initiative by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, as well.
In accepting the award, Shields expressed gratitude to the peers and mentors who helped shape her career. “This accomplishment would not have been possible without the lifelong friends, mentors, and relationships this dynamic community has given me. I am proud to be a leader in this industry and will continue promoting the inclusivity and collaboration that have fueled my growth as a professional,” she said. “It reminds us that true influence is built through relationships, advocacy, and a commitment to lifting others as you rise.”
Shields plans to continue driving innovation at Graymills, expanding its role in the label and packaging markets. She will also invest in workforce programs that strengthen the future of American manufacturing.
Industrywide, Shields expects to see growth in 2026 in specialized areas, including sustainability. She also is keeping a watchful eye on other changes affecting the industry, especially those dealing with regulatory affairs. Shields is following the value in flexible packaging and increasing M&A activity in the marketplace, too.
