When outside temperatures drop, relative humidity drops with it—often into the 20–30% range, writes Simco-Ion.

As temperatures drop each year, manufacturers across industries start to notice familiar challenges returning to their production lines: film clinging to rollers, material misalignment, contamination, labels refusing to lay flat, and equipment behaving unpredictably. These aren’t isolated issues—they’re all symptoms of the same seasonal force: winter static.
While static is always present to some degree, it increases dramatically in colder months. Understanding why this happens, and learning about the best static control solutions, can make the difference between a smooth-running line and ongoing operational headaches.
Static electricity forms when two materials contact and separate, creating an imbalance of charges. Processes like winding, rewinding, slitting, sheeting, labeling, and web handling naturally generate static every day. What changes in the winter is the environment.
Cold air holds far less moisture than warm air. When outside temperatures drop, relative humidity drops with it—often into the 20–30% range. Once that dry air is pulled indoors and heated, the humidity decreases even further. This matters because moisture in the air normally helps dissipate charge. When humidity is high, water molecules create a slightly conductive pathway that allows static to bleed off gradually. In winter, that pathway disappears.
With limited moisture in the air, charged surfaces retain their charge instead of releasing it. As a result, static levels climb higher and faster on materials such as:
This rise in charge then translates into real production issues.
When humidity drops and static rises, the consequences surface quickly on the line: Films cling to themselves or to rollers. Labels wrinkle, flag, or misplace. Operators feel more shocks at the machine. ESD-sensitive components face greater risk. Throughput slows as operators compensate for charge. Plus:
Simco-Ion has seen this pattern across converting, flexible packaging, plastics, printing, and assembly environments. Winter conditions don’t just make existing static issues more noticeable—they magnify them.
IQ Power Static Neutralizing BarsThe IQ Power Static Neutralizing Bars are designed to handle demanding industrial processes where static can cause misfeeds, wrinkles, or contamination. In low-humidity winter conditions, static charges build up faster and can disrupt converting lines. These bars deliver consistent ionization, neutralizing both positive and negative charges before they cause problems.
Cleanflex Easy GunThe Cleanflex Easy Gun is anionizing air gun that brings precision static elimination exactly where it’s needed. In winter, operators often face static buildup on parts or surfaces that attract dust. The Cleanflex Easy alows for targeted neutralization in these tricky areas, with a comfortable grip and adjustable nozzle for flexible operation.
IQ Power FantomThe IQ Power Fantom is a wide-coverage ionizing blower built for large surfaces and open areas where static must be controlled. Winter conditions can cause static to accumulate quickly, leading to contamination and jams. The Fantom blower provides powerful and consistent airflow infused with ions to neutralize charges before they have the chance to affect the production line.
IQ Power NozzleThe IQ Power Nozzle is designed for high-precision, point-specific static control. When winter dries out, static can concentrate in tiht spaces, causing sticking and misfeeds. The IQ Power Nozzle delivers targeted ioniziation, allowing operators to neutralize stubborn static spikes quickly. Its compact size and adjustable configurations make it perfect for small, hard-to-reach areas.
