Esko and Scantrust have announced the completion of a new integration that connects Esko’s Automation Engine workflow automation and WebCenter packaging management solutions with Scantrust’s serialization and secure QR code platform. The move is designed to simplify the addition of variable data to packaging artwork for CPG brands and their converter partners.

The integration enables automated, large-scale generation and printing of unique, secure, serialized QR codes directly onto product packaging, reducing the complexity that has traditionally limited adoption of on-pack variable data programs.

“The goal from the start for both companies was to further streamline and improve the process of adding variable data to packaging artwork,” says Jan De Roeck, marketing director at Esko. “This has traditionally been a complex task and a barrier to implementation of product features that add value to both brands and consumers. With the latest system integrations, Esko and Scantrust have continued a tradition of innovation by lowering the barrier to solving packaging design and printing challenges, especially with regard to serialization.”

At the core of the integration is the Esko Automation Engine Variable Data Printing (VDP) module, which enables the automated creation and embedding of unique QR codes into packaging designs at scale. The workflow is engineered to minimize manual intervention, helping converters incorporate serialization without disrupting existing prepress and production processes.

Nathan Anderson, CEO and founder of Scantrust, emphasizes the broader implications for brand owners. “Our mission is to help brands build trust and drive value through item-level traceability and consumer engagement,” he says. “By creating a deep integration with Esko’s industry-standard workflow, we’re making it easier than ever for brands to activate every single package into a dynamic, data-driven touchpoint.”

The integration supports several key applications relevant to converters and brand owners:

  • Brand protection and anti-counterfeiting: Each unique QR code acts as a digital identifier, enabling product authentication and supply chain visibility.
  • Consumer engagement: On-pack codes can link to loyalty programs, product origin information, sustainability data, and other digital content.
  • Supply chain traceability: Serialized codes allow tracking of individual units—pouches, labels, bottles, cartons—throughout production and distribution.
  • Scalability: The combined solution supports production volumes ranging from small runs to industrial-scale mass production.
  • Compliance: The system is designed to align with standards such as GS1 Digital Link and can integrate with platforms including Amazon’s Transparency anti-counterfeiting program.

“The integration between Esko and Scantrust bridges the gap between the physical packaging production process and the digital world of data management and consumer interaction,” Anderson adds. “This is the start of a new level of ‘connected’ packaging.”

For converters, the announcement reflects the continued convergence of packaging production workflows with digital traceability, compliance, and engagement requirements – areas that are increasingly shaping investment decisions across labels, flexible packaging, and folding cartons.
