Nestled near the intersection of Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa is Quality Printing, Inc., a family owned, full-service print shop. From the bright, welcoming lobby to the bustling production areas, owners Mark and Annie Opitz and their team provide personalized printing solutions with personal service, from concept to completion.
With in-house graphic design, a full copy center, and offset and wide-format presses, as well as new digital capabilities including roll-to-roll labels, the Opitzes and their team are a printing powerhouse. From a single flyer to fleet vehicle graphics or thousands of packaging labels, Quality Printing handles it all. Offerings span business cards, brochures, invitations, and mailers, as well as large-format posters, banners, yard signs, building signs, vehicle wraps, and decals. Customers also turn to the team for vinyl lettering and wall art, promotional products like mugs and keychains, and finishing touches such as laminating, binding, and installation.
They even take on the wildly unexpected such as creating giant 8-foot and 4-foot nutcracker imagery for their hometown’s major tourism campaign.
“About 10 years ago, Luverne was looking for a way to stand out,” Annie says. “A resident donated nutcrackers to the History Center, and that became our hook. We started by decorating dozens of 8-foot wooden nutcrackers with large-format prints. Then we partnered with a metal company to create hundreds more in multiple sizes. Our designers made custom versions for nearly every local business: a chef, a plumber (with a plumber’s crack, of course!), and Uncle Sam for us to complement our patriotic red, white, and blue company colors. People from other states have called to request their own nutcrackers. It’s been a lot of fun.”
To handle this vibrant variety of services, the company’s equipment lineup includes a Ryobi offset press, three Xerox digital presses, and most recently, a Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 230 digital press that can handle up to a million labels in a run, plus a Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM) mini finisher.
That investment was sparked by inquiries from a local case-ready pork processing customer. While Quality Printing expertly outfitted the plant with signage, the customer began asking for durable, freezer-ready labels. After extensive research, on-site testing, sample runs, and training with Konica Minolta, Mark and Annie brought the new equipment onboard.
Together, these latest additions form a powerful in-house label press and finishing system that allows Quality Printing to deliver high-quality, short-run and high-volume labels with quick turnaround.
“In our smaller community, we have to be diverse in our offerings, which led us into the label and narrow web industry,” Mark recalls. “With demand for digital growing and limited local availability, we took the opportunity to offer faster turnaround times, shorter runs, and more customized and complete solutions, all under one roof. Embracing digital has allowed us to deepen our relationships and become a stronger resource for our clients. We believe narrow web is the next big thing for Quality Printing.”
To further explore this new product line, they traveled to Chicago for Labelexpo Americas 2024. “We learned so much from generous vendors eager to share their knowledge,” Mark says. “We’re excited for the day we can pay it forward and help others succeed, too.”
Beyond labels, the company continues to produce a wide range of offset, digital, and wide-format products. And whatever format they need, customers have access to a personal online portal for easy, error-free order placement, proofing, and payment.
For Quality Printing, it’s all part of the fundamental mission to create long-lasting relationships with customers and assist them in reaching their goals and objectives.
Mark and Annie have been building those trusted relationships since they launched Quality Printing in 1999. Mark was trained in graphic communications and had worked in the business card industry when, after extensive market research, he decided to launch his own company. Armed with a used offset press, his first computer, and a bold vision, he dubbed his venture Quality Printing, which, as he explains, “said everything I wanted us to be.”
The first 2,500 square-foot building was an offset print shop with an office supply store to encourage walk-in customers.
“We’re half an hour away from Sioux Falls, the closest city, and there wasn’t an Amazon, so people came to us for a convenient place to buy paper and pencils and ink cartridges,” Annie notes. “Once they were in the door, they realized we could also do their printing.”
Over the years, as the shop has added large-format printing and the digital press, happy customers often consolidate all their printing needs with the Optizes.
Now expanded to a 7,800 square-foot facility, Quality Printing is a true family business. In the beginning, Annie continued working as a cosmetologist and also pitched in at the print shop, and she eventually joined the operation full-time. Their children – Tony, Ashley, and Mary – grew up there.
“They spent afternoons, summers, and weekends here cleaning, filing, answering phones, and helping with promotional products,” Annie recalls. “Today, Ashley and her husband, Brock, developed and maintain our website and provide support through their company, Benson Tech Solutions. Tony is our production manager, and our plan is to one day pass Quality Printing on to him. He recently married our production specialist Jenny Jorgenson’s daughter, Kennedi, and she helps out around her regular job as a nurse. We really are a family here!”
The workplace culture is also family-based, with a focus on balance, teamwork, and flexibility for all 10 employees.
“When our team feels supported, they can give their best to our customers and to each other,” Mark says. “For example, when our kids were growing up, we wanted to be there for them, and we want our employees to have that same freedom. We care about each other, and that makes Quality Printing a place where people enjoy working and growing together.”
The group is a mix of long-time team members who value face-to-face service and newer employees who embrace digital tools, helping the business meet every customer’s style.
The Quality Printing team extends that care into the Luverne community. Mark and Annie serve on local boards, supporting the town while helping drive planning and growth. Through LIFT (Luverne Initiatives For Tomorrow), Annie serves on the design committee planning banners for the 2026 Main Street celebration of America’s 250th birthday, while Mark is on the executive board and Dollars for Scholars board that manages a $19 million scholarship fund.
They’ve printed banners to honor local veterans, teamed up with the Herried Military Museum and other art and cultural organizations, and hosted school tours to introduce students to interesting job opportunities. And employees can take up to two paid hours every month for their own community volunteer efforts.
For Mark and Annie Opitz, Quality Printing has always been about more than just printing – it’s about relationships, teamwork, and community.
“What I appreciate most is the relationships we’ve built,” Annie says. “We’ve had the privilege of serving many of the same businesses and individuals for decades. We can’t go out to dinner without someone stopping us to ask about a printing job – and we love it. This business has always been a mission: When we put our heart into helping customers, our business thrives too. We’re proud of where we’ve been and excited about where we’re going.”
