Static intensity in the cold

Static electricity forms when two materials contact and separate, creating an imbalance of charges. Processes like winding, rewinding, slitting, sheeting, labeling, and web handling naturally generate static every day. What changes in the winter is the environment. 

Cold air holds far less moisture than warm air. When outside temperatures drop, relative humidity drops with it—often into the 20–30% range. Once that dry air is pulled indoors and heated, the humidity decreases even further. This matters because moisture in the air normally helps dissipate charge. When humidity is high, water molecules create a slightly conductive pathway that allows static to bleed off gradually. In winter, that pathway disappears.

With limited moisture in the air, charged surfaces retain their charge instead of releasing it. As a result, static levels climb higher and faster on materials such as:

  • Coated substrates
  • Paper
  • Labels
  • Trays and molded parts 

This rise in charge then translates into real production issues.
