When we talk about embossing technologies, innovation often takes center stage. But today, we want to shift the spotlight to a technique whose roots run deep into European manufacturing history — tool engraving.

Considered one of the oldest engraving techniques in the world, it continues to play a crucial role in modern production, delivering results that even today’s most advanced technologies cannot replicate.

Tool engraving dates back to the late 18th century, beginning with the embossing of leather goods. After hand engraving, it is the oldest known method for creating relief patterns on industrial products.

At Apex Embossing, we proudly carry forward this tradition through our heritage locations in France and the Netherlands:

  • Apex Embossing in France, formerly Keller Dorian, founded in 1872, is one of the oldest active engraving companies in the world.
  • Apex Embossing in the Netherlands, formerly Panhuizen, was founded in 1933 by Piet Panhuizen and has specialized in traditional tool engraving for generations.

With more than 150 years of combined craftsmanship, our team continues to protect and advance a skillset that has become increasingly rare.

Why tool engraving still matters today

Despite the rise of digital and laser-based engraving technologies, tool engraving remains essential for certain applications. Some patterns simply cannot be reproduced using mechanical or laser methods.

While it can be difficult to describe exactly why, our decades of experience show that tool engraving delivers a distinct visual and tactile quality that other processes cannot match. For many clients, traditional tool engraving is not just a preference, it is a requirement for maintaining product identity and long-standing brand quality.
