The small gap between the magnetic and anvil cylinder, also known as “clearance” or “undercut”, plays a decisive role in label converting. In combination with the thickness and composition of the liner material, the gap dimension determines the optimum height of the exible die. Smallest deviations decide on success and failure in die-cutting, as changes in the gap size have a negative impact on the die-cut quality.

In principle, optimum die-cutting results need an immaculate, stable die-cutting unit and cylinders as well as a perfectly manufac- tured exible die. This applies in particular to the rising variety of ( lmic) labelstock and ever thinner liner materials, which require extreme precision of all die-cutting components. However, this is often not su cient due to situational in uences (e.g. wear, heating), tooling tolerances and uctuating liner thicknesses.
